The use of New York airspace by big military drones sets some people on edge. One of them is Judy Bello, a Webster resident who has been arrested several times protesting at Hancock Field in Syracuse, where Air National Guard units control some of the drone flights in Afghanistan as well as test flights over Lake Ontario.
“I have problems with the fact that that is overlaid on my community,” she said. “I don’t expect them to be doing a military attack on us or anything, but I don’t think this is a real safe place for them to be doing this testing.”
Bello said some members of her group, Upstate Drone Action, harbor deep distrust of all UAVs. Bello doesn’t share that distrust, seeing potential benefit in civilian UAVs. But she does worry about the ease with which police could use them for invasive surveillance.
“I do have some problems with that,” she said. “I think it’s an unavoidable risk, and it’s going to take some incredibly creative thinking to keep that from happening.”
