NO U.S. MILITARY INTERVENTION IN SYRIA!!!

It’s illegal, ineffective, potentially catastrophic, …and EXPENSIVE:

ESTIMATED COSTS OF MILITARY INTERVENTION IN SYRIA

$1.4 million   – each Tomahawk Land Attack Missile
$25 million per week -The Navy’s USS Nimitz deployment in striking distance of Syria
$60 million – pledged to aid Syrian rebels  (not including CIA-funded weapons)
$500 million a year – training opposition forces in Syria
$1 billion/ month – establishing a no-fly zone inside Syria

COMPARE THESE COSTS TO NEW CUTS IN SOCIAL SERVICES:

HEAD START

Head Start provides preschool and two hot meals a day to an estimated 904,000 low-income children, costing an average $7,600 per child served. But Head Start has been cut by sequestration, eliminating services for more than 57,000 children and cutting the pay for more than 18,000 employees nationwide. In Rochester, $715,000 in cuts will eliminate 9 weeks of service and reduce hours of over 200 employees.

FOOD STAMPS

A current House bill will cut as many as 3.8 million people off of the food stamp rolls next year, saving the government $3.9 billion a year, mostly by ending the ability of the poor to become eligible for food stamps by qualifying for other benefits such as home heating assistance.

HOME HEATING ASSISTANCE

Congress has proposed devastating new cuts to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) across the country, which has already been cut by 30% since 2010. With the new cuts, the program will have lost $2 billion from its authorized spending level of $5.1 billion.

YOU DO THE MATH:

Restoring all cuts to Head Start = 2 weeks of USS Nimitz deployment
Providing Head Start for 2,000 more children = 10 Tomahawk missiles
Restoring all cuts for Rochester’s Head Start = ½ of Tomahawk missile
Eliminating all proposed cuts to Food Stamps = 4 months of Syrian no-fly zone
Restoring cuts to Home Energy Assistance = 2 years of training for Syrian rebels

THE MONEY IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE FOR WAR. WHY

NOT USE IT FOR OUR SOCIAL NEEDS INSTEAD?

Call our representatives and tell them to vote against military intervention.
