 Treasury Prods Lawmakers on Raising Debt Ceiling

The budget showdown is about to get hot again. This story relates the Treasury Department’s statement that it will not be able to pay government bills by sometime in September. Republicans want to extract a high price for agreeing to a new budget or to raising the debt limit which will follow in a few weeks.

Lest we think the Democrats and President Obama will stand strong, remember these words from White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

“The president has put forward a clear compromise proposal, a broad compromise proposal that would reduce the deficit significantly, including through savings in our entitlement programs, in a balanced way,” Mr. Carney said on Monday. “We continue to await a response.” emphasis added
