Labor Board Affirms Majority Vote
(Rochester, NY)- Certified Nursing Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, Activity Aides, and Secretaries of the Unity Living Center at 89 Genesee Street today voted to become members of 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. A majority of the workers voted to form a Union in an election supervised by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
“We have a bigger voice because we now have a Union here at Unity. This victory will empower us to provide more for our families and better care for our patients while also improving our work environment.” said CNA Mary Spears who has worked at Unity for over 11 years.
Evelyn Cruz, a CNA for over 12 years said, “I am proud that we stood together as workers and took a step forward for fairness and representation. We are proud that we’re now able to negotiate for better wages, healthcare, and working conditions. The low quality of our working conditions will no longer be so far from the high quality of care that our patients receive.”
The next stage for the new union members will be to sit down with management and negotiate a contract with improvements to working conditions and patient care.
1199 SEIU members work at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Anthony L. Jordan Health Center, six area nursing homes, and at many other health care facilities in Western New York.
Unity Living Center is a120 bed skilled nursing facility operated by the Unity Health System.
