“8” – a new play by Academy-award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (MILK, J. EDGAR) demystified the debate around marriage equality by chronicling the landmark trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger. See the human cost of discrimination. Uncover the arguments used to justify bans on marriage for gay and lesbian couples. Using the actual court transcripts from the landmark federal trial of California’s Prop. 8 and first-hand interviews, “8” shows both sides of the debate in a moving 90-minute play.
“The work that we produce at Bread & Water Theatre is always linked to the current times in some form or fashion. It is natural for us as artists to reflect the society we live in on the page and on the stage. In a little over a week we will be launching the 13th Rainbow Theater Festival with a staged reading of 8 by Dustin Lance Black.
You may already be aware of Mr. Black’s body of work. He wrote the screenplay for MILK which garnered him the Academy Award as well as J. EDGAR starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He is an exciting writer fit for our times and we are pleased to play host to his play.
There is no play out there more topical than 8. Focusing in on the Proposition 8 trial in California this play puts the trial on stage in a way that is dramatic and understandable to all. Currently the Proposition 8 trial is before the Supreme Court and the decisions that come out of this court case will change the course of human events in our country forever. Theatre could not be more powerful or more important as it is today.
I cannot recommend more highly this production. The words are powerful. The ideas represented are profound. And its time is now. To purchase tickets please visit BreadandWaterTheatre.org. Performances are scheduled for April 5 and 6 at 8pm and April 7 at 2pm. We look forward to seeing you at the theatre.”
